September 15 Design Activity # 2:

Additional reading: Arthur Wesley Dow. Composition: Understanding Line, Notan and Color. 1914. PDF (Pages 8-47).

In this activity we will create a well designed arrangement of dark and light elements using the Japanese concept of Notan, Light/Dark harmony.

We will watch the short video on Notan and then create our own light/dark harmonious designs.

*Materials: square light paper, square dark paper (1/2 width of light), glue, scissors

Post activity: Once you have completed your Notan, create a blog post which includes,  1)  5+ clear and engaging images  or a video of your work from the day’s design related activities and 2) a 100+ word write-up, video, or sound file (think short podcast) of what you achieved (or what you were working toward) from a design thinking perspective. Use vocabulary, concepts, and ideas from the week’s material. The blog post is due Sunday by midnight.
